Bali Car Rental Fuel Guide: Pertamina, Pricing, and Tips

The one running cost you actually control

A rental car in Bali has a fixed daily rate, and then it has fuel. Fuel is the part of the budget that moves with how you drive and how far north you go, and it is where visitors hit the most small confusions: which grade to put in, whether you pump it yourself, whether a card will work, and what the rental agreement expects the tank to look like at return.

The Pertamina names you will see

Almost every proper filling station in Bali is Pertamina, the state fuel retailer, with a handful of private-brand stations around the south. On the forecourt the pumps are named rather than labelled by octane number alone:

• Pertalite — the lower-octane subsidised petrol. Access to subsidised fuel has been progressively restricted and at times tied to registration schemes, so do not plan a trip around it.
• Pertamax — the standard non-subsidised unleaded petrol. This is what most rental cars in Bali are meant to run on, and the safe default.
• Pertamax Turbo — higher octane, aimed at performance engines. Unnecessary for a typical rental.
• Bio Solar, Dexlite, Pertamina Dex — the diesel range, from subsidised to premium. Only relevant if your rental is a diesel.

If you are unsure, ask the agency at handover which grade the car takes and put the answer in your phone notes. Bali rental fleets are mostly small petrol hatchbacks and MPVs, and Pertamax is the usual answer.

How a fill-up actually works

Stations are full service. You pull up, tell the attendant the grade and either a rupiah amount or ask for a full tank — "full tank" is widely understood. The attendant pumps, and you pay at the pump rather than walking to a till.

Two habits worth keeping:

• Watch the meter reset to zero before pumping starts. Attendants routinely show you; it removes any ambiguity about what you are paying for.
• Carry cash. Card and QRIS payment is common in the south but not guaranteed at smaller stations inland or up north, and readers do go offline.

What it costs

Indonesian fuel prices are set nationally and adjusted periodically, with the subsidised grades sitting well below the rest. Rather than quote a number that will be stale by the time you read this, use the shape of it: filling a small hatchback in Bali is cheap by European, Australian or Gulf standards, and a week of ordinary island driving is a minor line next to the rental itself. Distances in Bali are short but average speeds are low. A Denpasar–Ubud–Denpasar day burns very little; a Munduk or Amed run burns noticeably more, because of the climbs and the crawling rather than the kilometres.

Roadside sellers and bottled fuel

Along secondary roads you will see small stalls selling petrol from bottles or a hand-cranked dispenser. They exist because the nearest station can be twenty minutes away, and they are a genuine rescue if you have misjudged a route. For a rental car, treat them as an emergency option only — grade and cleanliness are not guaranteed, and putting the wrong or dirty fuel in a car you do not own is an expensive mistake.

What the rental agreement expects

Most Bali agencies use a same-to-same policy: the car reaches you at a certain level and should come back at that level. Some hand it over full and expect it back full. Either way:

• Photograph the fuel gauge at pickup and at return. Ten seconds, and it settles any later disagreement.
• Ask whether the return level is "same as pickup" or "full", and get the answer in writing in the chat thread rather than as a verbal aside at handover.
• Fill up the day before you return the car, not on the way to the depot. The last-minute detour is what makes people late.
