Bad rentals announce themselves early

A car rental in Bali goes wrong in one of a handful of predictable ways, and almost all of them are visible before you pay. The problem is that the warning signs look like normal informality — a chat message instead of a contract, a price that seems generous, a photo that turns out to be of a different car. Once you know what to look for, filtering becomes fast.

Red flag: the deposit is vague

"We take a small deposit" is not a number. In Bali the deposit is where most disputes start, because it is the money you have already handed over when the disagreement about a scratch begins. A rental that will not tell you the exact deposit amount, in writing, before you commit is telling you something.

The other version of this is the passport deposit. Handing over your passport as security is common practice with some informal operators and it is a bad idea regardless of how friendly the conversation is — you lose your ability to walk away from a bad negotiation, and you may need that passport for a hotel check-in or a domestic flight.

A clean rental states the deposit in a number up front. Some Bali listings genuinely run zero deposit, which removes the entire category of dispute.

Red flag: no verification, no company, no paperwork

If the entire transaction lives in a chat thread with a personal account, there is no agency behind it. That matters when something happens to the car — an unverified operator has no process for accident handling, no replacement vehicle, and no accountability beyond goodwill.

Ask who the agency is. A real one has a name, a verification record, and a rental agreement you can read before signing.

Red flag: the photos are not of your car

Stock photos, or one photo of a spotless showroom model, often mean you will meet a much older car with a different set of scratches. Ask for photos of the actual vehicle, or book from a listing that shows the real car with its actual year, transmission, and seat count.

Red flag: pressure to skip the walkaround

The handover inspection is not a formality — it is the only record of the car's condition at the moment it became your responsibility. Anyone rushing you through it is either disorganised or setting up a later argument. Take five minutes: video the whole exterior slowly, all four wheels and their rims, the windscreen, the bumpers, the roof, then the interior and the fuel gauge. Timestamped video ends most deposit disputes before they start.

Red flag: insurance that no one will explain

"Fully insured" means nothing without an excess figure and a list of exclusions. Ask two direct questions: what do I pay if the car is damaged, and what voids the cover? Common exclusions worth knowing about are damage to the underside, tyres and glass, water damage, and driving outside Bali. If nobody can answer, assume you are the insurance.

Red flag: the price is far below everything else

Bali rental pricing clusters within a fairly narrow band for a given car class and season. A listing well below that band usually recovers the difference somewhere — an inflated fuel charge on return, a cleaning fee, a late-return penalty measured in hours, or a deposit that comes back short. Read the terms rather than the headline rate.

Red flag: delivery arrangements that keep moving

A driver who changes the meeting point twice, arrives very late without contact, or asks for extra cash on arrival is a preview of how the rest of the rental will go. Delivery should be a confirmed time and place agreed before you pay.

What a clean rental looks like
