Bali Instagram Spots You Can Reach by Car (and When to Go)

Timing beats location

Almost every well-known photo spot in Bali is genuinely photogenic and genuinely crowded, and the variable you control is arrival time. Tour groups run on a predictable schedule — most arrive between mid-morning and early afternoon. Having your own car is what lets you be there before or after that window, which is the entire difference between an empty frame and a queue.

Handara Gate

The Balinese split gate in the highlands north of Ubud, framed against forest and mountains. It is a genuine drive from the south — treat it as part of a highland day rather than a standalone trip — and the light is best early, before the cloud builds over the mountains. There is a small fee for photographs at the gate.

Lempuyang and the "Gates of Heaven"

In east Bali, on a steep hill road. The famous reflection shot is created with a mirror held under the phone, not by a lake, and the queue for it is long and managed by numbered ticket. Arriving at opening is the only realistic way to keep the wait reasonable. The road up is narrow and steep — this is a spot where clearance and a car with decent power matter.

Tegallalang rice terraces

North of Ubud and the most accessible of the famous terraces by car. It is at its best in early morning light before the tour buses, and the terraces themselves are working farmland — expect small donations at various points along the paths. Parking is roadside and fills quickly.

Campuhan Ridge Walk

A ridge path starting near central Ubud, and one of the few spots on this list that is genuinely a walk. Park in town and go at sunrise; it is exposed and gets hot fast.

The waterfalls: Tibumana, Tegenungan, Sekumpul

Tegenungan is the easiest to reach and the busiest. Tibumana is quieter with a shorter descent. Sekumpul, in the north, is the most dramatic and by far the biggest commitment — a long drive plus a real hike, best treated as its own day.

Nusa Penida: a boat trip, not a drive

Kelingking Beach and Diamond Beach are on Nusa Penida, a separate island reached by fast boat from Sanur. You do not take your rental car across. Park it in Sanur, take the boat over, and arrange transport on the island. Plan a full day for it.
