Lombok has two seasons, and they drive very differently

Lombok sits just east of Bali and shares its broad climate pattern — a dry season through the middle of the year and a wet season around the turn of the year — but it is noticeably drier overall, particularly in the south. That matters for a self-drive trip, because the difference between the seasons here is not just whether you get wet. It changes road conditions, what vehicle you want, how far ahead you should book, and how much daylight driving time you actually have.

Dry season: the easy driving window

The middle months of the year are Lombok's dry season, and they are the most straightforward time to have a car. Roads are predictable, the unsealed access tracks down to the southern beaches are firm, and hill roads in the north are free of the small landslips that occasionally follow heavy rain.

This is also peak visitor season, which has two consequences worth planning around. Availability tightens — automatics and seven-seaters go first — and rates firm up. If you are travelling in this window and you need a specific type of vehicle, book earlier than feels necessary.

The trade-off in the driest stretch is dust and glare. The landscape browns off, unsealed roads throw up dust behind other vehicles, and low sun on an east-west road at either end of the day is genuinely blinding. Clean your windscreen more often than you would at home.

Wet season: cheaper, greener, and more demanding

The wet months around the turn of the year bring the opposite trade-offs. Rates soften, availability opens up, and the island is at its most spectacular — the rice terraces are green, the waterfalls in the north run hard, and the crowds thin out.

The driving is more demanding, though. Expect:

• Heavy but usually short downpours, often in the afternoon, that reduce visibility to very little for twenty minutes at a time
• Standing water on sealed roads where drainage is limited
• Slick, sometimes impassable unsealed tracks, especially the access roads to the more remote southern and southwestern beaches
• Occasional small landslips on hill roads in the north, which can narrow a road for a while

None of this makes a self-drive trip a bad idea. It makes the choice of vehicle matter more. Ground clearance and decent tyres are worth paying for in the wet season in a way they are not in July.

The shoulder months: arguably the sweet spot

The transitions on either side of the dry season are the underrated window. You get most of the dry season's road reliability, much of the wet season's greenery, softer rates than peak, and materially better availability. If your dates are flexible and you care more about driving conditions than about guaranteed sunshine every single day, the shoulders are the smart booking.

What the weather should change about your booking

Vehicle choice. Dry season, a small car handles nearly everything on your itinerary. Wet season, or any itinerary with remote beach tracks in it, prioritise ground clearance.

How far ahead you book. Peak dry season and the year-end holiday period both tighten supply — particularly for automatics. Off-peak, you have far more room to choose.

Your daily plan. In the wet season, front-load driving into the morning. Afternoon rain is the pattern, and a beach that is a wonderful two-hour stop at eleven can be a wet drive home at four.

Your buffer time. Whatever the season, Lombok journeys take longer than the distance suggests. In the wet, add more.

A note on the year-end holidays

The Indonesian and international year-end holiday period is its own thing — busy regardless of rainfall, with the tightest availability of the year. If your trip falls in it, book as early as you can and be flexible about vehicle type.
