Car Rental in Mataram, Lombok: Complete Guide
Mataram is the working centre of Lombok
Most visitors think of Lombok in terms of beaches and Rinjani, but Mataram is where the island actually functions. It is the capital of West Nusa Tenggara province, the largest urban area on Lombok, and it absorbs the old port town of Ampenan to the west and the commercial district of Cakranegara to the east into one continuous city.
For a driver, that means two things. Supply is better here than anywhere else on the island — more agencies, more vehicles, more chance of getting the specific car you want. And the driving is genuinely urban, which is a different skill from the coast road.
What city driving in Mataram is like
Expect dense scooter traffic, one-way sections, and junctions where flow matters more than signals. It is far calmer than Jakarta and less chaotic than south Bali in peak season, but it is a city, and the rhythm is different from anywhere else on Lombok.
The practical advice is the same as anywhere in Indonesia: drive predictably, signal early, do not accelerate into gaps, and accept that scooters will fill any space you leave. Being smooth matters more than being assertive.
Getting in and out
Mataram sits on the west coast, which puts it within an easy drive of Senggigi to the north and connects onward to the Gili harbours. Lombok International Airport at Praya is in the centre-south, so the trip from the airport up to Mataram is a real cross-island run rather than a quick transfer — worth building into your arrival-day plan.
What is actually worth stopping for
Mataram is not a sightseeing town, but a few things justify the parking. The Mayura Water Palace and the Pura Meru temple complex in Cakranegara are both central and easy to reach by car. Ampenan's old port streets have a distinct character worth a wander. And the city has the island's best selection of markets, supermarkets, pharmacies, and mobile shops — which makes it the sensible place to stock up before heading somewhere quieter.
Parking and fuel
Malls and larger businesses have proper parking with attendants. On the street it is more informal: an attendant will wave you into a space and help you back out for a small tip. Keep small notes accessible in the car rather than digging through a wallet at every stop.
Fuel is abundant here, which is a genuine advantage. Fill up in Mataram before heading north to the hills or east toward Sembalun, where stations thin out considerably.
What to rent
For city use and west-coast trips, a small hatchback is easier to park and cheaper to run than anything larger. If Mataram is a base for exploring the whole island — hill roads, north coast, south-coast beach tracks — the calculation changes and a higher-riding vehicle with real ground clearance becomes worth the extra.
Deposits and verification
Lombok's rental market is younger than Bali's and deposits still lean cash-heavy across the island, Mataram included. A no-deposit option can be requested and Arrentio will try to match you with an agency willing to accommodate it, but do not assume it is standard here yet.
Because Mataram has the most agencies on the island, it also has the widest spread in how professionally they operate. Verification matters more where the range is wider.
