Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno allow no cars and no motorbikes. Nothing motorised. You get around on foot, by bicycle, or by horse cart. That single rule is what makes a Gili day trip a two-part journey: a drive to the mainland harbour, then a boat.

Understanding that split up front is the difference between an easy day and one that starts with a confused conversation at a dock.

Where you actually drive to

The main departure point from the Lombok mainland is Bangsal harbour, on the northwest coast past Senggigi. Teluk Kodek, a short distance away, is the other commonly used departure point and tends to be calmer. Both are reachable by car on the coast road north from Senggigi.

From Senggigi the drive is short but slow, because the coast road is narrow, winding, and genuinely scenic, with the Malimbu and Nipah viewpoints on the way. From Mataram add roughly another half hour. From Kuta Lombok in the south, this is a long enough drive that a Gili day trip becomes an early start rather than a casual outing.

Parking the car

You leave the car in a paid parking area near the harbour and collect it when you come back. This is completely routine and there are attendants and marked areas, but it is worth handling deliberately:

• Ask your rental agency in advance whether harbour parking is arranged, included, or entirely on you. It is a common gap.
• Take your valuables with you. The car will be unattended for the day.
• Photograph the car and its surroundings when you park it, as you would anywhere.
• Note the closing time of the parking area if the last boat back is late.

The crossing

Boats run between the mainland harbour and the Gilis throughout the day, with public boats and faster private options. Crossing time is short. The practical constraint on a day trip is not the crossing itself but the last boat back, which is earlier than most people assume and varies with sea conditions.

Build the day around the return boat, not the outbound one. Missing it means an unplanned night on the island and a car sitting at the harbour overnight.

Getting around once you land

There are no cars, so plan on foot or bicycle. Gili Trawangan is small enough to walk around in a couple of hours at an easy pace, and bicycles are widely available on the island. Gili Air and Gili Meno are quieter still.

If you are travelling with small children, limited mobility, or a lot of gear, factor this in: nothing on the island can be reached by vehicle, and a horse cart is the only alternative to walking.

Is a day trip enough?

Honestly, a night is better. The Gilis are at their best early in the morning and after the day boats leave, and a day trip means arriving at the busiest time and leaving before the good part. If your schedule only allows a day, aim for the earliest reasonable boat out.

If you do stay overnight, the car simply remains at the harbour parking area until you return. Confirm the arrangement and any overnight fee with the parking attendant before you board.

Which car makes sense for this trip

Nothing demanding, because the driving is coastal rather than mountainous. A comfortable vehicle with good air conditioning matters more than clearance here, unless the same rental is also covering the Senaru or Sembalun hill routes later in the trip.
