International Driving Permit Rules for Renting a Car in Lombok

The short version

To drive legally in Indonesia as a visitor, you need your valid national driving licence and an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued in the country where that licence was granted. The IDP is not a licence on its own — it is a standardised translation that must be presented alongside the original. One without the other does not satisfy the requirement.

This applies on Lombok exactly as it does on Bali, Java, or anywhere else in the country. Lombok being a quieter island does not make it a different legal jurisdiction.

Why it matters more than people assume

There are three separate reasons this is worth getting right, and only one of them is the police.

Rental agencies ask for it. A professionally run agency will want to see both documents at handover, because renting to a driver who is not legally permitted to drive is their problem as much as yours.

Roadside checks happen. Police checkpoints are a normal part of driving in Indonesia and being unable to produce the right documents turns a routine stop into a lengthy one.

Insurance is the real one. If you have an accident while driving without the licence documentation the law requires, the insurance position on the vehicle can become very complicated very quickly. That is the risk that actually costs money, and it is entirely avoidable.

Get it before you travel

An IDP is issued by an authorised body in the country that issued your licence — typically an automobile association or the licensing authority itself — and it must be obtained before you leave. You cannot get a foreign IDP in Indonesia, and websites offering instant "international licences" online are not the same document.

Apply well ahead of your trip. The process is usually straightforward, but it is not instant, and discovering the gap at the rental handover is not a fixable situation.

What to carry in the car

• Your national driving licence (the original, not a photo).
• Your International Driving Permit.
• Your passport, or at minimum a clear copy plus knowledge of where the original is.
• The rental agreement and the vehicle documents the agency provides.

Keep them in the vehicle, not in a hotel safe. A document you cannot produce at a checkpoint may as well not exist.

Check the categories

An IDP covers the categories your home licence covers, nothing more. If your home licence only permits automatic transmission, or has restrictions, those restrictions travel with you. Worth checking before you book a manual vehicle.

Expiry and validity

IDPs are issued for a limited period, commonly a year, and an expired one is no better than none. Check the expiry date against your travel dates, and check that your home licence itself does not expire mid-trip — an IDP is meaningless if the licence it translates has lapsed.

If you do not have one

Be straight with the agency rather than hoping. Some will decline the rental, which is the responsible answer. Others may offer a car with a driver instead, which is a legitimate alternative and removes the licensing question entirely. What is not worth doing is driving without the documents and treating it as a paperwork technicality — the insurance exposure is real.
