3-Day Lombok Itinerary by Car: South Coast, Waterfalls, and the Coast Road

Three days, one car, no wasted backtracking

Most three-day Lombok plans fail the same way: they treat the island as small because it looks small, then lose half a day driving between things that turned out to be ninety minutes apart. Lombok rewards a route that moves in one direction rather than radiating out from a single hotel. Here is a version that does.

This itinerary assumes you land at Lombok International Airport in Praya, which sits in the south, and that you have a car for all three days.

Day 1: Praya to the south coast

Drive time: under an hour to Kuta Lombok.

Collect the car at or near the airport and head south. Kuta Lombok is about half an hour away on good road, which makes it the most sensible first base of any Lombok trip that starts by air.

Spend the afternoon on the beaches immediately either side of Kuta. Tanjung Aan is the postcard one, a wide horseshoe bay with a hill at the eastern end worth the short climb for the view over both halves. Seger Beach is closer to town and easier to reach. Neither requires anything demanding of the car.

Do the Mandalika circuit road in the late afternoon if you are into motorsport, or skip it entirely if you are not. Eat in Kuta, which has the best concentration of food on the south coast.

Day 2: The western beaches, then north

Drive time: roughly three hours total, spread across the day.

Start early and head west along the south coast. Mawun is the first stop, a deep bay with a steep access road that is paved but narrow. Selong Belanak is next, the wide, shallow, gently sloping beach that everyone photographs. The road between them climbs and twists, with some rough sections depending on recent weather. This is the first day where clearance and decent brakes earn their keep.

From Selong Belanak, turn north toward Mataram. The route through the interior is slower than the map suggests, so give it real time. Push on through Mataram to Senggigi and stay there for the night. You have now covered the south coast and positioned yourself for the best drive on the island.

Day 3: The coast road and the waterfalls

Drive time: three to four hours, plus stops.

This is the day the car really matters. Head north from Senggigi on the coast road, stopping at the Malimbu and Nipah viewpoints. The road hugs cliffs above a series of bays and it is genuinely one of the best drives in Indonesia. It is also narrow, so take it slowly and let the confident local traffic pass.

Continue past Bangsal harbour, then turn inland toward Senaru for the Sendang Gile waterfall, a short walk from the parking area. If you have energy and decent footwear, carry on to Tiu Kelep, which involves river crossings and is worth the effort.

Return the same way, allowing enough daylight for the coast road on the way back. If your flight is the following morning, drive back toward Praya in the evening rather than at dawn.

If you want to add the Gili Islands

You cannot fit a Gili night into three days without cutting one of the days above. If you attempt a day trip, do it from Bangsal, and know that the car stays parked at the harbour. The Gili Islands allow no motorised vehicles at all, so the car gets you to the boat and no further.
