Surfing Lombok is a driving trip

Lombok's surf is not concentrated in one town. The breaks are strung along a long southern coastline, and almost every one of them sits at the end of its own access road running down from the main east-west route behind the hills. There is no coastal road linking them. You drive the spine, drop down to a bay, surf, come back up, and drive to the next one.

That geometry is why a car changes a Lombok surf trip more than it changes a Bali one. Boards stay dry and shaded, wetsuits and wax live in the boot, and a session that turns out to be blown out costs you twenty minutes instead of your afternoon.

Kuta Lombok is the natural base. Nearly everything below is within an hour or so of it in one direction or the other.

West of Kuta

Are Guling is the first bay of note heading west, quiet and often overlooked, with a beach break that works on the right swell and a short access road down from the main route.

Selong Belanak is the beginner anchor of the whole coast: a long, sandy-bottomed, forgiving wave in a wide bay with board hire and warungs behind the sand. If anyone in your group is learning, this is where the trip should include a day. The access road is sealed and straightforward, and there is parking behind the beach.

Mawi sits further west again and is a different proposition — a serious left that draws experienced surfers, reached by the roughest access track of the western group. Unsealed, rutted, and noticeably worse after rain. This is the spot that makes ground clearance worth paying for, and it is worth checking the track on foot if it looks bad rather than committing blind.

The Kuta bays

Seger, just east of Kuta town, is a short drive from almost any accommodation in the area and works as a quick dawn check before you commit to a longer drive.

Tanjung Aan is better known as a swimming bay, but the reef at its edges picks up swell and the drive there is easy sealed road the whole way. Its practical value on a surf trip is as a fallback when the wind ruins everything else.

East of Kuta

Gerupuk is the one that rewards a car most. The bay holds several distinct breaks, but you do not paddle to them — you drive to the village harbour, park, and take a boat out with a local operator. Because the breaks face different directions, Gerupuk often has something rideable when the rest of the coast does not, which makes it the standard bad-conditions insurance policy.

Ekas, further around to the east, is a longer and slower drive on progressively narrower roads. It is quieter for exactly that reason. Treat it as a full day rather than a quick strike.

The far southwest: Bangko Bangko

Desert Point at Bangko Bangko, out on the southwestern tip beyond Sekotong, is the famous one and also the least casual. The drive is long, the final stretch of road is rough, facilities at the end are minimal, and the wave is notoriously fickle. Go with a full tank, cash, water, and no fixed expectations.

Getting boards there

Confirm board transport before you book, not at pickup. Two things to ask:

• Does the car have a roof rack, and are straps included? Many do not, and racks are not something you can improvise safely at the last minute.
• Do the rear seats fold flat? A compact MPV with the third row down swallows shortboards inside, which is the better option anyway — nothing on the roof means nothing to worry about at a parking spot.

Bring a towel or blanket for the boot floor, keep leashes and wax in a bag rather than loose, and do not leave boards visibly strapped to a roof overnight.

Practical notes for a surf day

Fuel up in Kuta before you head out; filling stations thin out quickly once you leave town. Carry small notes, because most beach access points have informal parking with a small fee. Wind on this coast typically favours early sessions, so plan the drive around the tide and light rather than around breakfast. And build in more driving time than the map suggests — the southern roads are winding, shared with motorbikes, and not built for hurrying.
