Self-Drive Car vs Scooter Rental in Lombok: Which Is Better?

The honest answer: it depends on your itinerary, not your budget

Almost every visitor to Lombok asks this question, and almost every answer online treats it as a cost comparison. It is not. A scooter is cheaper per day, and if the price gap were the only factor nobody would rent a car anywhere in Indonesia. What actually decides it is how far you plan to go, how many of you there are, what you are carrying, and what happens when it rains.

Where the scooter genuinely wins

Short hops around one base. If you are staying in Kuta Lombok and your radius is the town, a couple of nearby beaches, and dinner, a scooter is faster, easier to park, and more fun. Same for pottering around Senggigi.

Solo or a couple, travelling light. Two people with day bags is exactly what a scooter is designed for.

Narrow lanes and informal parking. There are beach access points and village lanes where a scooter simply fits and a car does not.

Cost, for short distances. Over a few days of low-mileage local riding, the scooter is clearly cheaper.

Where the car wins, and wins decisively

Distance. Lombok is bigger than people expect. Kuta in the south to Senaru in the north, or Senggigi to the southeast coast, are real drives. Doing those on a scooter is possible and thousands of people do it, but you arrive tired, dehydrated, and sunburnt, and you have spent the whole journey concentrating rather than looking.

Rain. This is the one that catches people out. Lombok has a proper wet season, and tropical rain does not politely wait for you to reach shelter. In a car, a downpour is a minor inconvenience. On a scooter, it is a soaked bag, a slick road surface, and a decision about whether to keep going.

Groups and families. Three or more people, or anyone travelling with kids, and the comparison ends. Two scooters cost more than one small car and are considerably less safe with children.

Luggage, surfboards, and shopping. Airport transfers with real suitcases are miserable on two wheels. Surfboards need a rack or an interior that takes them. Anything you buy has to fit somewhere.

Rough and steep sections. Several southern beach access roads are loose, rutted, and steep — the exact conditions where inexperienced scooter riders come off. A car with reasonable ground clearance handles them with far less drama.

Safety, plainly. Motorbike injuries are the single most common serious mishap for visitors across Indonesia, and Lombok's mix of unlit rural roads, loose gravel, and unfamiliar traffic conventions is not a forgiving place to learn. If you have never ridden a scooter at home, a holiday in Lombok is a poor place to start.

The licence question applies to both

Whichever you choose, you need the correct licence. For a car, that means your home licence plus an International Driving Permit. For a scooter, an IDP endorsed for motorcycles — a car-only IDP does not cover you, and neither does a car licence. This matters far beyond a police check: riding without the right licence can invalidate travel insurance entirely, which turns a minor accident into a serious financial problem.

The practical middle ground

Plenty of visitors do both, and it is often the smartest answer: a car for the days you cover ground — the south coast loop, the drive north to the waterfalls, airport transfers — and a scooter for the days you never leave your base.

If you are only choosing one for a week-long trip with any real exploring in it, the car is the safer default in Lombok. The island rewards range, and range is exactly what two wheels makes uncomfortable.
