Driving to Tanjung Aan Beach: Car Rental Guide
The easiest great beach to reach in south Lombok
Tanjung Aan is the bay most people picture when they think of southern Lombok: a long curve of shallow, pale water, headlands at both ends, and two visibly different sands — one fine and soft, the other a coarse, rounded grain often described as peppercorn sand. It is a short and mostly straightforward drive east of Kuta Lombok, which makes it the rare south-coast beach that is genuinely easy to reach with any rental car.
The drive from Kuta Lombok
The road east out of Kuta is sealed and in good condition for the length of the run to Tanjung Aan. It is not a long drive — the reason to take it slowly is not the surface but the traffic mix: motorbikes, the occasional truck, and pedestrians on a road with no real shoulder. There are a couple of rises with limited forward visibility where overtaking is a bad idea.
Coming from further afield, the route is the same one you would take from the airport at Praya via Kuta. If you are staying in Senggigi or Mataram, treat Tanjung Aan as a full day rather than a morning, because the crossing of the island takes longer than the map suggests.
Parking and access
There is more than one access point to the bay, and they behave differently. The main western end has the most established parking and the largest cluster of warungs and drink stalls. The eastern end, closer to the hill, has its own parking and is the natural choice if Bukit Merese is your main target.
Parking is generally informal and a small fee is collected. Carry small notes — nobody will have change for a large one. Do not leave anything visible in the car, which is standard practice anywhere rather than a comment on Lombok specifically.
The beach itself
The water at Tanjung Aan is shallow a long way out and usually calm, which makes it one of the better swimming and wading beaches on the south coast, and a rare southern beach that works well with small children. There is limited natural shade, so the warungs behind the sand and their loungers are more than a luxury in the middle of the day.
The peppercorn sand is genuinely unusual and worth walking barefoot on — it is coarse enough to feel like small pebbles but rounded and comfortable.
Bukit Merese at sunset
The hill at the eastern end of the bay, Bukit Merese, is the single most rewarding thing you can do here and the reason to time your visit late. It is a short, non-technical walk up grassy slopes from the parking area, and the view opens out over the bay on one side and the open ocean and headlands on the other. It is the best sunset spot on Lombok's south coast, and it gets busy for exactly that reason.
Two practical notes: the grass is slippery when dry as well as wet, and there is no lighting at all on the way down. Bring a phone torch and start down while there is still some light in the sky.
Batu Payung, and the tides
From the eastern end of Tanjung Aan you can reach Batu Payung, the umbrella-shaped rock formation, on foot at low tide, or by boat from the beach. The walk is only sensible on a falling or low tide — check before you set out, because being caught the wrong side of a rising tide turns a pleasant walk into a problem.
Planning the day
The natural shape of a Tanjung Aan day is: arrive after the mid-morning heat has been broken by a swim, eat at one of the warungs, spend the afternoon on the sand, then walk up Merese for the last of the light. That is a full afternoon and evening, not a stop between other things.
If you are combining it with the western beaches, do those first and finish here — the geography and the light both point that way.
The drive home
Kuta Lombok is close, so the drive back is short. If you are heading further — to Senggigi, Mataram, or an airport hotel — remember that you will be driving in the dark on roads with minimal lighting and plenty of unlit motorbikes. Budget more time than the daytime equivalent and take it steadily.
Renting a car for the south coast
Tanjung Aan itself needs nothing special, but the rest of the south coast is where ground clearance earns its keep.
