Getting there and how the gate works

Ancol sits in North Jakarta, reachable from most of the city via the toll network and the coastal road. Access is through an entrance gate where entry is charged — typically per person plus a charge for the vehicle. Have your electronic toll card topped up: it covers the toll road on the way and is often the smoothest way through the gate too.

• Fuel up before you go. Combining the drive with a fill-up beforehand saves fighting traffic later.
• Note your parking spot. Car parks here are large and the buildings look similar from the inside.
• Leave nothing visible in the car — the same rule as anywhere.
• Bring a change of clothes if the water park or beach is on the plan, and something to keep wet things separate.
• Plan the drive home. Late afternoon on a weekend is heavy on the roads back into the city; leaving after sunset or before mid-afternoon both beat the worst of it.
