3-Day Bali Itinerary by Car: The Short-Trip Route That Skips the Traffic

Three days means choosing a corridor, not a checklist

The most common mistake on a short Bali trip is trying to reach both ends of the island. Bali's road network funnels almost everything through the same congested middle, so a day that looks like "Uluwatu in the morning, Ubud in the afternoon" is really a day of driving. With three days, pick one corridor — the south-to-Ubud line — and go deep instead of wide.

Day 1: The south, close to where you land

Stay near the airport on the first night. Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur and Uluwatu are all within a reasonable drive, and each gives you a full first day without a long transfer. Do a beach in the morning, a coastal drive in the afternoon, and a sunset somewhere on the west coast. If you land early enough, Uluwatu's clifftop is the strongest single first-evening option.

Pick up the car on arrival day rather than mid-trip — it removes the awkward transfer and means day two starts on your schedule.

Day 2: Drive to Ubud and stay there

Leave for Ubud early. The mid-morning stretch northbound is the worst traffic you will hit, and an early start turns a slow crawl into a straightforward drive. Spend the day around Ubud rather than in it: the rice terraces at Tegallalang, a waterfall or two north of town, and the village roads through Payangan, which are quiet and genuinely pleasant to drive.

Stay in Ubud that night. Driving back south the same evening wastes the best part of the following morning.

Day 3: Highlands or east, then back

Two good options for the final day, both from Ubud:

• North to the lakes. The road up toward Bedugul climbs into cool highland country with lakeside temple grounds and a substantially different landscape. It is the more scenic drive.
• East toward Sidemen or Tirta Gangga. Quieter, greener, and better if you want rice valleys and volcano views over lakes and forest.

Either way, plan to be back near the airport with a real buffer. Bali traffic makes tight departure timing genuinely risky, and returning a rental car is much easier without a countdown running.

Making three days work

• Base-hop once, not twice. Two bases across three days is the maximum that leaves time for anything else.
• Drive early. Almost every congestion problem in Bali disappears before mid-morning.
• Skip Nusa Penida. It needs a boat and effectively a full day; on a three-day trip it costs you a third of the holiday.
• Book the car for the whole trip, not just the days you plan to drive. A part-day rental rarely saves enough to justify losing the flexibility.
