Renting alone changes the maths, not the logic

Solo travel in Bali usually defaults to a scooter, because splitting a car with nobody makes it look expensive. That comparison is fair on cost and misleading on everything else. Alone, you have no second person to hold the map, watch the bags, take over driving when you are tired, or help if something goes wrong — which is exactly when the protection a car gives you is worth the most.

When a car is clearly the better call for a solo traveller

• You are covering distance. Airport transfers, a day trip north, the Bukit after dark, or a move between towns with luggage.
• You are travelling in the wet season. Rain makes a solo scooter journey miserable and slow; in a car it is a non-event.
• You have gear. Laptop, camera, surfboard, or a suitcase you would rather not strap to a bike.
• You are working from Bali. A car turns a scattered week of cafés, coworking and errands into something you actually do rather than avoid.

A scooter still makes sense for short hops inside one town in dry weather, with the right licence. Both can be true in the same trip.

Booking as one person

Take the smallest car that fits your plans. A compact is cheaper, easier to park in Canggu and Ubud, and less stressful on narrow lanes. There is no reason to book a seven-seat MPV for one.

Book automatic. Solo means you handle traffic, navigation and hill starts with no help. Automatic removes one of those.

Prefer delivery to your accommodation. Collecting a car alone at an unfamiliar depot after a long flight is avoidable friction. Agree the time and place before you pay.

Check the deposit before anything else. Solo travellers are more exposed to a bad deposit outcome — there is nobody else's card to fall back on, and you may be settling a dispute alone with a flight to catch. Some Bali listings run a genuine zero deposit, which removes the problem entirely.

• Film the walkaround. Two minutes of timestamped video at pickup, all four sides, wheels, glass and fuel gauge. This is your only witness.

Cost, honestly

A car for one is more per day than a scooter, and less than daily private drivers if you are moving around properly. The comparison that actually decides it is not car versus scooter — it is car versus the ride-hailing, transfers and day-driver bookings you would otherwise stack up across a week, plus the trips you would simply skip because getting there alone is too much hassle.

For a stay of several days with any real movement in it, the car usually wins on both money and what you actually get to see.
