Why families need a car in Bali

Bali looks small on a map and behaves like a much bigger island once you are on it. The road from the south beaches to Ubud is short in kilometres and slow in reality, and the routes north into the highlands are winding enough that "an hour away" rarely means an hour. With kids, that gap between map and reality is the whole planning problem — and a car is what solves it. You get air conditioning, a boot for beach gear and a stroller, and the freedom to abandon a plan the moment a nap happens.

Day 1-2: Base yourself in the south

Sanur and Nusa Dua are the two calmest bases for families — flat, walkable, with gentle water. Both are a manageable drive from the airport, and both make good launch pads. Spend the first day recovering from the flight rather than driving: unpack, swim, and get the kids on local time. On day two, do a short outing — a coastal drive, a beachfront lunch, an early dinner — so everyone gets used to the rhythm of Bali traffic before you attempt anything longer.

Day 3-4: Move to Ubud and the island's middle

Ubud is the natural second base. The drive up from the south is the single most traffic-prone stretch you will do, so leave early and treat it as a half-day, not a transfer. Once you are based in Ubud, the good family stuff is genuinely close: rice terrace walks, the monkey forest, a river valley or two, and a string of waterfalls within a short drive north. Tibumana and Tegenungan are the easiest with small children — shorter stair descents than most of the alternatives.

Day 5: Waterfalls, lakes and the highlands

Drive north from Ubud toward the lakes region around Bedugul. It is noticeably cooler up there, the drive is scenic rather than gruelling, and the lakeside temple grounds are one of the few Bali attractions that work for both toddlers and teenagers. Bring layers — highland afternoons get properly chilly by Bali standards, and nobody packs for that.

Day 6-7: Back south for beach days

Return to the coast for the last stretch. The west-coast beaches around Seminyak and Canggu are better for sunsets than swimming with small kids; the calmer water is east and south. Break the drive back with a stop rather than pushing straight through, and keep the last full day deliberately unplanned.

What to check on a family rental

• Seat count over category name. A seven-seat MPV with luggage is a different vehicle from a seven-seat MPV without it. Check the boot space in the photos, not just the seat number.
• Child seats. Not every listing includes them and they are rarely standard. Ask the agency directly before booking rather than assuming.
• Air conditioning condition. Every listing claims it; a verified agency with recent photos is your best signal that it works.
