Renting a car for Umrah in Jeddah

Jeddah is the main airport gateway for Umrah and Hajj pilgrims arriving from outside Saudi Arabia, and a growing number choose to rent a car themselves for the drive to Makkah rather than book a shared shuttle or private transfer. It's a reasonable option — the road is straightforward — but a few things are specific to this trip that don't apply to a normal tourist rental.

The drive from Jeddah to Makkah

It's roughly 70-80km via Highway 40, typically 60-90 minutes outside of peak pilgrimage periods. During Hajj season and the last ten days of Ramadan, traffic around the Haramain approach roads slows significantly — build in extra time, and expect road closures and lane restrictions managed by traffic police that a GPS app won't always show in real time.

Miqat and Ihram checkpoints

If you're entering the state of Ihram before reaching Makkah, you'll pass a Miqat checkpoint — non-Muslims and anyone not observing Ihram correctly can be turned back at this point regardless of vehicle. This isn't a rental-car issue, but it does mean you should confirm your Ihram status and documentation before you're mid-drive with a deadline.

Rental vs. private transfer vs. shared shuttle

A shared shuttle is cheapest but fixed to its own schedule; a private transfer is convenient but priced per trip, not per day. A rental car costs more than a one-way shuttle seat but gives you control over timing — worth it mainly if you're also visiting Jeddah itself (the historic Al-Balad district, the Corniche) before or after Makkah, rather than flying straight in and out.

Documents to carry

Bring your passport, Umrah/Hajj visa or Nusuk permit, home driving license, and an International Driving Permit — checkpoints during pilgrimage season are stricter about paperwork than routine city driving, and an incomplete document set is a common cause of delay at Miqat and highway checkpoints alike.
