Car Rental in Praya, Lombok: The Complete Airport-Side Guide
Praya is the front door to Lombok
Lombok International Airport sits just outside Praya, in the south of the island, and almost every visitor passes through it. That makes Praya the practical starting point for a Lombok car rental, whether or not you spend a single night in the town itself.
Understanding what is around Praya, and what the drive out looks like in each direction, is the difference between a smooth first afternoon and a stressful one.
Where Praya sits, and why that matters
Praya is inland, roughly in the middle of the island's southern half. Kuta Lombok and the south-coast beaches are about half an hour south on good road. Mataram and the west coast are around an hour and a half to the northwest. The north coast and Senggigi are further still, and Sembalun in the highlands is a serious half-day away.
That geography drives the whole trip plan. Landing in Praya and heading straight north to Senggigi is a long first drive after a flight. Landing in Praya and heading south to Kuta is a short, easy one. Most itineraries work better starting south.
Airport pickup versus town pickup
Collecting the car at or near the airport is the obvious default: you are already there, and the first drive is short. It also means the handover happens in a place with lighting, space to walk around the vehicle, and no pressure to hurry.
Picking up in Praya town itself, or having a car delivered to your first hotel, is worth considering if you land very late or want a night to acclimatise before driving. Agree the exact meeting point in advance either way. Vague arrangements are where airport pickups go wrong.
Roads out of Praya
- South to Kuta Lombok: short, well surfaced, and easy. A comfortable first drive.
- Northwest to Mataram: longer, busier, and mixed in quality. Allow more time than the map shows.
- East toward Labuhan Lombok: quiet and straightforward, with far less traffic than the west.
- West to Selong Belanak and Mawun: scenic, hilly, and narrower, with the occasional rough section.
None of these demand a specialised vehicle, but the western beach access roads and anything heading into the hills reward genuine ground clearance rather than a low city hatchback.
Documents and driving
You need a valid driving licence recognised for driving in Indonesia. If your licence was not issued in Indonesia, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Sort this before you fly, because it is not something you can resolve at an airport counter.
What to check before you drive away
Do this every time, and especially on a first pickup after a flight when you are tired and want to just go:
- Walk the car and photograph every existing scratch and dent, dated.
- Photograph the odometer and the fuel gauge.
- Check the spare tyre and the jack are actually present.
- Test the air conditioning before you leave, not thirty minutes into the drive.
- Confirm in writing what the deposit covers and how it is returned.
Deposits in Praya and across Lombok
Lombok's rental market still leans toward cash deposits, more so than Bali, where zero-deposit listings have become common. That is the current baseline rather than a red flag, and it applies at the airport just as much as elsewhere on the island. Ask for a written receipt for any cash deposit. If you would prefer not to leave a cash deposit at all, say so when you enquire and Arrentio will try to match you with an agency willing to work that way.
Booking ahead versus arriving and asking
Arriving and negotiating on the spot is possible, but it puts you at the counter with luggage, jet lag, and no comparison. Every real listing on Arrentio shows the deposit amount, the agency verification status, and the full vehicle specification up front, so the comparison happens before you fly rather than in an arrivals hall.
