Why Senggigi works as a driving base

Senggigi is Lombok's original resort strip, a stretch of hotels, restaurants, and beach along the west coast just north of Mataram. It has been welcoming visitors longer than anywhere else on the island, which shows in the practical stuff: accommodation at every level, places to eat after dark, and enough rental supply that you are not stuck with whatever is left.

For a self-drive trip it sits in an unusually convenient spot. The Gili harbours are up the coast to the north. Mataram, the island's largest city, is a short drive south. And the coast road running through town is one of the better-surfaced roads on Lombok.

The coast road north

The drive north out of Senggigi toward Malimbu and Nipah is the road people photograph. It climbs and curves along the headlands with the Gili Islands sitting offshore, and there are pull-offs at the viewpoints where you can stop properly instead of slowing to a crawl in traffic.

It is also genuinely winding. Blind corners, gradient, and a fair number of scooters mean it rewards an unhurried pace. There is no reason to rush it — the whole point of the road is that you can stop.

Heading south into Mataram

South of Senggigi the road runs down into Mataram and the old port quarter of Ampenan. The character changes fast: coastal quiet becomes city traffic, one-way systems, and dense scooter flow. It is not difficult driving by Indonesian standards, but it is a different mode from the coast road and worth planning for if you are heading to a market or a mall rather than a beach.

Parking and daily practicalities

Parking in Senggigi is straightforward compared to anywhere in south Bali. Hotels and restaurants along the strip generally have their own space, and informal attendants will help you back out of a spot for a small tip, which is normal across Indonesia and worth having small notes on hand for.

Fuel is easy to find along the main road here, which is worth appreciating because it stops being true once you head into the hills or down the smaller coastal roads.

What to rent

For a Senggigi-based trip that stays on the west coast and runs up to the Gili harbours, a small hatchback or a compact MPV is plenty. If your plan includes the hill roads inland toward Sembalun, the north coast, or the rougher tracks down to south-coast beaches, ground clearance starts to matter and a higher-riding vehicle earns its place.

Air conditioning is not optional. Coastal Lombok is hot and humid year-round, and a car that struggles to cool down turns every drive into an endurance test.
