Do you need an International Driving Permit in Jakarta?

For most foreign visitors, yes. Indonesia recognises the International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. A home-country licence on its own is not sufficient to drive legally here, and both the rental agency and a police officer at a checkpoint are entitled to ask for the permit.

The IDP is not a standalone licence. It's a standardised translation of your existing licence, and it's only valid when carried alongside the original. Leaving your home licence in a hotel safe and carrying only the IDP puts you in the same position as carrying neither.

Get it before you travel

An IDP is issued by an authorised body in the country that issued your driving licence — typically a national motoring organisation or licensing authority. It cannot be obtained after you arrive in Indonesia. That's the single most common mistake: visitors assume it's a formality they can arrange locally, then find out at the rental desk that it isn't.

Apply before you fly, allow time for processing, and check the expiry — IDPs are issued for a limited period, and an expired one is treated as no permit at all.

The 1949 convention detail that catches people out

Some countries issue IDPs under the 1968 Vienna Convention instead of, or in addition to, the 1949 Geneva Convention. Indonesia is a party to the 1949 convention. If your country issues both, make sure you're carrying the 1949 version, or a permit that explicitly covers it. Ask the issuing body directly if the paperwork isn't clear — it's a quick question that avoids an expensive problem.

ASEAN licence holders

Drivers holding a licence from an ASEAN member country are covered by a regional arrangement and generally don't need a separate IDP. If you're in that category, carry your national licence and confirm the position with the rental agency when booking, so there are no surprises at pickup.

If you live in Indonesia

Long-term residents on a residence permit should convert to an Indonesian licence (SIM) rather than running indefinitely on an IDP. Conversion requires your residence documentation and is handled through the police licensing service. Until it's done, keep the IDP current — this is where a lot of new arrivals get caught out, because IDP validity is shorter than most people's stay.

What the rental agency will ask for

Expect to present, at pickup:

• Your original home-country driving licence
• Your International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention)
• Your passport
• The card used for payment or the deposit, in the driver's name

Agencies check these because their insurance depends on it. If a licence isn't valid for Indonesia, cover can be void in an incident — which means an unlicensed driver isn't just risking a fine, but the full cost of any damage.

At a police checkpoint

Routine checks happen and are normal. Have the licence, IDP, and the vehicle documents accessible rather than buried in luggage. Being calm, polite, and having the right paperwork ready makes the whole thing a short conversation.

Every named driver needs their own

If two people will share the driving, both need a valid licence plus IDP, and both need to be named on the rental agreement. An unnamed or improperly licensed driver behind the wheel is the fastest way to invalidate insurance.
