Why the south coast is best done by car

The southern beaches of Lombok are strung along a coastline that has no single connecting road hugging the shore. Each bay sits at the end of its own spur running down from the main east-west road behind the hills. That geometry is exactly why a car beats every other option here: you drive the spine, drop down to a beach, come back up, and drop down to the next one. On a scooter you do the same thing but arrive sandy, sunburnt, and with nowhere dry to put a camera.

Kuta Lombok is the natural base. Everything below is within a comfortable day loop from there.

Morning: head west first

Start west, because the western beaches are the ones you want in soft light and before the afternoon wind picks up.

Mawun is the first stop most people make — a deep horseshoe bay with headlands on both sides and calm water in the middle, which makes it one of the better swimming beaches on this coast. The road down is short and steep in places.

Selong Belanak is the next major bay west, and the reason half of Lombok learns to surf here: a long, shallow, sandy-bottomed break that is genuinely forgiving. There are warungs behind the beach, so this is a sensible lunch anchor if you want to eat with your feet in the sand.

Mawi sits further west again and is the one to skip if you are short on time or nervous about the access road, which is the roughest of the group. It rewards you with a serious left-hand break and far fewer people, but it is not a casual detour.

Midday: the drive itself

The road between the southern bays is where a lot of itineraries lose an hour they did not budget. Distances on a map look trivial; the reality is a winding, undulating road shared with motorbikes, occasional livestock, and stretches where the surface deteriorates without warning. Assume your average speed will be well under what the distance suggests and you will enjoy the day considerably more.

Two practical notes. First, fuel up in Kuta before you head out — filling stations thin out fast once you leave town, and the roadside bottles are a last resort, not a plan. Second, several beach access points have informal parking where a small fee is collected; carry small notes.

Afternoon: swing east

Coming back through Kuta, keep going east.

Tanjung Aan is the postcard bay — two distinct sands (one fine, one famously peppercorn-textured), a long curve of shallow water, and the hill at its eastern end. That hill, Bukit Merese, is the single best sunset viewpoint on the south coast, a short walk up from where you park. Time your day so you finish here.

Batu Payung is reachable from the eastern end of Tanjung Aan on foot at low tide, or by boat. Check the tide before you commit to walking.

Timing the loop

A comfortable version of this day is: leave Kuta mid-morning, two western beaches before lunch, lunch at Selong Belanak, back east through Kuta in the early afternoon, Tanjung Aan for a long swim, and Merese for sunset. Trying to add Mawi and Batu Payung to that same day is where it stops being a holiday and starts being a driving challenge.

What to bring in the car

Water for more than you think you need, cash in small denominations, a towel per person, and something to keep wet gear off the seats. Reef shoes matter more on this coast than most — several of these bays have rock at the edges. If you are surfing, confirm before you book that the car can take boards inside or has a rack.

After dark

Driving back to Senggigi or the airport area after sunset is doable but slower — lighting on the southern roads is minimal and motorbikes without working rear lights are common. If your day ends at Merese, plan on a relaxed drive home, not a fast one.
