Salik Explained: How Dubai's Toll System Works for Rental Cars
If you drive in Dubai, you will pass through Salik toll gates — and if you are in a rental car, it helps to know how the charges reach you.
What is Salik?
Salik is Dubai's automatic, barrier-free toll system. There are toll gates on major roads such as Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Garhoud Bridge, and Al Maktoum Bridge. Each time you pass a gate, a fixed toll is deducted electronically — there are no booths to stop at.
How it works in a rental car
Nearly every rental car in Dubai comes with a Salik tag already fitted to the windscreen. You do not need to set anything up. As you drive through gates, the tolls are recorded against the car.
How you are charged
Providers handle Salik in one of two ways:
- Deducted from your deposit at the end of the rental, itemised by gate.
- Billed to your card a few days after return, once the tolls clear.
Ask your provider which method they use, and keep an eye on your route so the total is no surprise.
Tips to keep costs down
- During busy hours, Salik uses dynamic pricing — tolls are higher at peak times.
- A navigation app can route you around gates if you prefer, though it often adds time.
- Salik is separate from Abu Dhabi's Darb toll system — if you drive to the capital, those gates are charged too.
