UAE Car Rental Insurance Explained: CDW, Excess and Full Cover
Insurance is the part of a car rental most people skim over — and the part that costs the most when something goes wrong. Here is what the terms actually mean in the UAE.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)
Almost every rental includes a CDW. It caps your liability for damage to the rental car, but it does not make you liability-free — you are still responsible for the excess.
The excess (deductible)
The excess is the fixed amount you pay towards any damage claim, no matter how small. It can range from a few hundred to several thousand dirhams depending on the vehicle. This is the single most important number to check before you book.
Reducing or removing the excess
Most providers offer an optional excess reduction or full protection package for a daily fee. It lowers or removes the excess so a scratch or dent does not eat your deposit. If you are driving long distances or in busy city traffic, it is usually worth it.
What is typically not covered
- Tyres, windscreen, and undercarriage (unless you add specific cover).
- Off-road driving — important if you plan a desert or wadi trip.
- Fines and tolls, which are always the driver's responsibility.
Before you sign
- Confirm the excess amount in writing.
- Photograph the car from every angle at pickup.
- Check whether personal accident cover is included.
