UAE Driving Licence Rules for Tourists and Foreign Residents
Before you rent a car in the UAE, make sure you are legally allowed to drive it. The rules differ for tourists and residents, and getting them wrong can invalidate your insurance.
If you are a tourist
Short-stay visitors can drive on their home-country licence, but most nationalities also need an International Driving Permit (IDP) carried alongside it. If your licence is issued in English or Arabic, an IDP is generally not required — but rental providers may still ask for one, so it is safest to bring it.
- Minimum age to rent is usually 21, rising to 23 or 25 for premium categories.
- GCC-issued licences are accepted directly.
- Always carry both your licence and passport while driving.
If you are a resident
Once you hold a UAE residence visa, you must drive on a UAE licence. Many nationalities can convert their existing licence without a test; others need to pass the local test. You cannot keep driving on a tourist licence after your residency is issued.
Why it matters for your rental
Rental insurance only covers drivers who are legally licensed. If you drive without the correct permit, a claim can be refused and you become personally liable for damage. Every additional driver must be named on the rental agreement and meet the same requirements.
