The far west is a driving destination by definition

West Bali National Park sits at the opposite end of the island from the tourist south, covering a big stretch of dry forest, savannah and protected coastline near the ferry port at Gilimanuk. There is no meaningful public transport out there, day tours from the south are rare and rushed, and the good parts are spread along a coast road rather than concentrated in a town. If you want to see it properly you drive, and you stay at least one night.

Getting there: the drive from the south

Two routes work. The southern coastal road through Tabanan and Negara is the flatter, faster option and passes black-sand beaches and rice country most visitors never see. The northern route via Bedugul and Singaraja is slower and more mountainous, but far more scenic, and it lets you loop rather than backtrack — north one way, south the other, which is the better way to plan the trip.

Either way, treat the transit as a full half-day with stops rather than a sprint. This is a long drive by Bali standards and the roads reward a relaxed pace.

Pemuteran as a base

Pemuteran, on the north-west coast just outside the park, is the practical base: a quiet bay with calm water, a strip of low-key accommodation, and easy access to both the park and the boats out to Menjangan Island. It is dramatically quieter than the south, and the drive along the north coast to reach it is one of the more relaxed stretches on the island.

Menjangan Island and the marine area

Menjangan, a small uninhabited island within the park, is the main draw for snorkelling and diving — reached by boat from the mainland jetty, not by car. Park your car at the departure point and go over by boat. Entry involves a park permit arranged through your operator, so confirm what is included before the day itself.

The park itself: birds, savannah and trails

The land side of the park is dry forest and savannah, quite unlike the green terraces most people associate with Bali. It is the last habitat of the critically endangered Bali starling, and guided walks focused on birdlife are the standard way to see the interior. Trails require a guide, arranged at the park office — this is not a wander-in-alone destination.

Practical notes

• Fill the tank before you leave the main towns. Stations are sparse along the western stretch.
• Start early. The drive out is long enough that an afternoon departure means arriving in the dark on unfamiliar roads.
• Bring cash. Park fees, guides and small warungs out west are not reliably card-friendly.
• Ground clearance helps on the smaller access roads down to the coast, though the main routes are paved.
