7-Day Bali Itinerary by Car: South, Ubud, East Coast, and Highlands

Plan a loop, not a hub

The single biggest improvement you can make to a week in Bali is to stop returning to the same hotel every night. The island rewards a loop: south coast, central highlands, the eastern valleys, and back. Driving one direction around the island means each transfer is a scenic drive rather than a repeated commute through the same congested corridor.

Days 1-2: The south

Land, stay south, and take it easy. Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur or Uluwatu all work as first bases — beaches, sunsets, and easy food, with everything within a short drive. Collect the car on arrival day so the trip runs on your schedule from the start.

Spend day two on the southern peninsula: the clifftop temples, the beaches on the Bukit, and a sunset somewhere on the west coast.

Days 3-4: Ubud and the centre

Drive north early to avoid the worst of the traffic. Ubud is the natural second base, and its best material is in the surrounding countryside rather than the town — rice terraces, river valleys, waterfalls north of town, and the quiet village roads through Payangan and the ridge above the Ayung.

Use one of the two days for a highland run north to the lakes around Bedugul. It is noticeably cooler, the drive is one of the prettiest on the island, and it gives the week a genuine change of landscape.

Days 5-6: East Bali

This is the part most week-long trips skip and shouldn't. Drive east to Sidemen, a valley of terraced rice fields under Mount Agung, and stay a night. From there, continue to the east coast: the water palaces at Tirta Gangga and Taman Ujung, then the black-sand bays around Amed, where the coast road is quiet and constantly in view of the sea.

Two nights in the east is the minimum that makes the drive worth it. One night turns it into a transfer.

Day 7: Back to the south

Return along the coast road through Candidasa, breaking the drive with a beach stop rather than pushing straight through. Build in a real buffer before an evening flight — traffic on the final approach to the airport is the least predictable part of any Bali itinerary.

Practical notes for the week

• Fuel up before eastern and highland stretches. Stations are common in the south and sparse elsewhere.
• Pack a layer for the highlands. Bedugul afternoons are properly cool.
• Ground clearance matters for Sidemen and the eastern hill roads.
• Keep one day unplanned. Weather and traffic will use it, and if they don't you get a spare beach day.
