Car Rental in Kuwait City: What Tourists and New Residents Should Know

Renting a car in Kuwait City

Kuwait's road network is modern and wide by regional standards, but a handful of local realities are worth knowing before you pick up a rental.

Documents you'll need

  • A valid driver's license, with an International Driving Permit strongly recommended — some nationalities can convert a home license to a local one more easily than others, but for a short visit, an IDP alongside your home license is the simpler path
  • A passport for identity verification
  • A credit card for the security deposit

What's different about driving in Kuwait

  • Right-hand traffic, consistent with the rest of the Gulf.
  • Extreme summer heat (regularly exceeding 45°C / 113°F) makes a properly functioning air conditioning system a genuine safety consideration, not just comfort — check it before leaving the rental lot.
  • Fast highway speeds relative to some neighboring markets — driving noticeably under the flow of traffic can itself be a hazard on Kuwait's major highways.
  • Sandstorms, while infrequent, can cut visibility sharply with little warning — pulling over safely rather than pushing through is the right call.

Choosing an agency

The same basics apply as anywhere in the Gulf: verified vehicle condition, transparent pricing with no surprise fees at return, and a real contract rather than a handshake deal.
