Car Rental in Lombok: A Complete Guide for Self-Drive and Gili Access
Renting a car in Lombok: what's different from Bali
Lombok sits one short flight or a fast boat from Bali, with a fraction of the traffic and a self-drive scene that's still catching up to its bigger neighbor. That's mostly good news for visitors — quieter roads, less competition for good vehicles — but it also means fewer standardized norms around pricing, deposits, and vehicle condition than you'd find in Bali.
Roads and driving conditions
Main routes — the loop around Senggigi, the road south to Kuta Lombok, and the highway east toward the Mandalika circuit — are in decent shape and lightly trafficked compared to south Bali. Once you head into the hills toward Sembalun (the Rinjani trailhead town) or the smaller coastal roads, expect narrower, steeper roads with fewer guardrails and less phone signal. A vehicle with real ground clearance is worth it if hill routes are on your itinerary.
The Gili Islands are car-free — plan your parking
This catches first-time visitors off guard: the Gili Islands (Trawangan, Air, Meno) don't allow cars or motorbikes at all — getting around there is by foot, bicycle, or horse cart. If Gili is on your itinerary, you'll drive to the harbor (Bangsal or Teluk Kodek are the main departure points), leave the car in a paid parking lot near the dock, and take a boat over. Ask your rental agency whether harbor parking is included or arranged — it's a common gap that catches people out mid-trip.
Kuta Lombok and the south coast
The south coast around Kuta Lombok and the Mandalika area is where most of the newer resorts and surf breaks are concentrated, and it's a genuinely different drive from Senggigi in the north — expect unpaved stretches on the way to some of the more remote beaches (Mawun, Selong Belanak, Tanjung Aan), so factor extra time into any south-coast day plan.
Deposits and insurance — still mostly cash-based
Lombok's rental market is younger than Bali's, and deposit terms lean more toward cash than the card-hold or $0-deposit options becoming common elsewhere in Indonesia. Ask specifically what the deposit covers and get a written receipt — the same basic questions worth asking anywhere, but doubly so in a market with less standardization.
