Licensing: what you actually need

Saudi Arabia accepts a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home license, or a GCC-issued license outright. Tourists on the e-visa or Umrah visa should carry both their home license and an IDP — some agencies will rent against a home license alone if it's already in English/Latin script, but an IDP avoids any argument at the counter or a checkpoint.

Getting around the ring roads

Riyadh is organized around a set of ring roads — King Fahd Road runs north-south through the center, while the Northern, Eastern, and Southern Ring Roads route through traffic around the city instead of through it. GPS apps handle the routing fine; the adjustment is mental, not navigational — expect wide, fast roads and long blocks, closer to a US sunbelt city than a compact Gulf downtown.

Parking

Malls (Riyadh Park, Kingdom Centre, Granada) and most business districts have large free lots — parking itself isn't the friction point it is in older Gulf city centers. Historic Diriyah and Boulevard Riyadh City get busy on weekend evenings; arrive early or expect a longer walk from the lot.

Typical costs and deposits

Economy sedans start in a similar range to Dubai and Doha; SUVs and larger vehicles run a premium given demand from both business travelers and local families. Deposits are usually held on a credit card rather than cash — a request for a large cash deposit from an unlicensed operator is a red flag, not a norm.
