The volcanic slopes above Kaliurang are jeep-only terrain — a rental sedan won't make the ash-track roads. Traffic and road conditions

Central Jogja's core (Malioboro, Kraton area) gets dense and one-way heavy — a car is more useful for the temple/volcano day trips than for downtown sightseeing, where walking or a becak covers it better. Roads out to Borobudur and Prambanan are well-paved and straightforward to self-drive.
