East Bali Road Trip Guide: Sidemen, Amed, and the Quiet Side of the Island

The east is the Bali most visitors skip

Most trips never get further east than Ubud, which is precisely what makes the eastern half worth driving. The traffic thins out within half an hour of leaving the central corridor, the landscape opens into rice valleys under Mount Agung, and the coastline turns from surf beaches to black-sand coves with calm water. None of it is walkable and very little of it is served well by day tours — it is a driving region.

Sidemen: the valley you build the trip around

Sidemen sits inland, east of Ubud, in a valley of terraced rice fields climbing toward Agung. The drive in is the appeal as much as the destination — narrow lanes, villages, and viewpoints that are simply wide spots on the road. Stay at least one night. Sidemen at dawn, before the cloud closes over the volcano, is the single best reason to have your own car in east Bali: no tour arrives early enough for it.

Tirta Gangga and Taman Ujung

Both are former royal water palaces, both are within a short drive of each other on the east coast side, and both are dramatically less crowded than comparable sites in the south. Tirta Gangga's stepping stones across the koi pools are the famous image; Taman Ujung is larger, emptier, and better for a slow walk. Pair them in one morning.

Amed and the north-east coast

Amed is not one village but a string of them along a dry, hilly stretch of coast, with black-sand bays, calm snorkelling water, and views across to Lombok on a clear morning. The coast road here is one of the most enjoyable drives on the island — twisting, quiet, and constantly in sight of the sea. It is also where you will most appreciate not being on somebody's schedule, because the best swimming is early and the best light is late.

Candidasa and the road back

Heading south-west from Amed, the coast road passes Candidasa and a series of quieter beaches — Virgin Beach among them, reached down a rough side road. This makes a natural return leg toward Ubud or the south, broken into a half-day rather than a single long push.

What the roads want from a car

• Ground clearance matters here more than anywhere else in Bali. The lanes into Sidemen, up toward Lempuyang, and down to the eastern beaches are steep, uneven, and sometimes unpaved.
• Fuel stops thin out east of Ubud. Fill up before you head into the valley.
• Drive the hill sections in daylight. Lighting is minimal and the corners are blind.
• Phone signal is patchy in the valleys. Download offline maps before you leave the main road.
