How to Spot a Trustworthy Car Rental Agency in Bali
Why this matters more in Bali than in a lot of markets
Bali's rental market is largely informal — Instagram accounts, WhatsApp groups, and word-of-mouth listings sit alongside registered agencies with real offices, and it's not always obvious from a listing alone which is which.
1. Do they show the actual car, not a stock photo?
A legitimate agency photographs its own fleet, interior included. Stock or borrowed images are a real warning sign that the "listing" may not correspond to any specific, available vehicle.
2. Do they ask for your documents before handing over the keys?
A rental agency doing its job properly asks for your license, IDP, and passport before you drive off — not just a deposit and a phone photo of your passport. If they skip this, it's a signal about the rest of their process too.
