Fuel is simple in Jakarta once you know two things

Petrol stations in Indonesia work differently enough from many countries to be briefly confusing: you usually don't pump the fuel yourself, and the grade names aren't the ones you're used to. Sort out those two things and refuelling stops being something you think about.

Who pumps the fuel

At most stations, an attendant serves you. You pull up, tell them which grade you want and how much, and they handle the nozzle and the payment. It's normal — and welcome — to stay in the car.

Two habits make this smooth. First, check that the pump display is reset to zero before fuelling starts; this is a completely routine thing to ask and attendants expect it. Second, say what you want clearly: the grade name, and either a full tank or a specific amount.

Understanding the grades

Fuel in Indonesia is sold under brand names rather than octane numbers alone, and the state operator's names are the ones you'll see most often. Higher-numbered grades correspond to higher octane. Diesel is sold under its own separate names, and a small number of vehicles take it.

The important part isn't memorising brand names — it's using what the car requires. Ask the rental agency at pickup which grade the vehicle takes, and check for a label near the fuel filler cap, which many rental vehicles have. Putting a lower grade than specified into a car that requires higher octane is a real way to cause damage you'll be liable for; putting petrol in a diesel car is worse.

International brands also operate stations across Jakarta with their own grade naming. The same rule applies — match the octane the car needs, not the cheapest option on the board.

Paying

Cash still works at most stations, and cashless payment (QR or card) is widely available and increasingly the default. Keep some cash as a backup anyway, since not every station or every pump handles every payment method.

Fuel policy on your rental

Rental agreements handle fuel in one of a few ways, and the listing or agreement will say which. The most common and the easiest to verify is same-to-same: you receive the car at a certain level and return it at that level.

Whatever the policy, do two things. Photograph the fuel gauge at pickup and at return — it takes seconds and settles any disagreement. And keep the receipt from your last fill-up before returning the car.

If the policy involves the agency refuelling on your behalf, ask what rate they charge for that. Convenience is fine when it's priced transparently.

Practical range planning in Jakarta

City driving in heavy traffic consumes noticeably more fuel per kilometre than open-road driving, so a tank goes less far than the highway figure suggests. If you're heading out of the city — toward Bandung, Bogor, or the coast — fill up before joining the toll road rather than relying on finding a station at the right moment.

Stations are plentiful in the city itself, so there's rarely a reason to run low. The one time it bites is when you're already stuck in traffic with a warning light on and no easy way to change lanes.
