Jakarta's beach weekend

Anyer sits on the west coast of Java, facing the Sunda Strait, and it is the closest proper stretch of beach to Jakarta that people actually drive to for a weekend. On a clear day you can see Krakatau's silhouette out in the strait — a view no highland weekend can offer.

It is a different kind of trip from Puncak or Bandung. Instead of climbing into cool air, you head west along the coast into humidity and sea breeze, and the pace of the weekend is slower: swimming, seafood, and doing very little.

The drive west

The route runs west out of Jakarta on the toll road toward Merak, then exits and follows the coastal road south through Cilegon and down to Anyer. The toll section is fast and straightforward; the coastal road at the end is the character of the trip — slower, more local, with the sea appearing on your right.

Timing matters less here than for Puncak, mostly because there is no narrow mountain pass with a reversing traffic system to negotiate. That said, the toll road out of Jakarta on a Friday evening or Saturday morning still carries everyone else leaving the city, and Sunday afternoon still carries them back. Leaving early remains the best move.

Why Anyer works when the mountains do not

The mountain routes south of Jakarta are capacity-limited by geography — a narrow pass can only carry so many cars. The road west is a proper highway for most of its length, which means congestion is bad rather than absolute. You may sit in traffic; you are much less likely to sit still for an hour waiting for the direction of a road to be reversed.

Anyer also spreads out along a coastline rather than concentrating into one town, so the crowd disperses across a long stretch of beach and resorts instead of piling into a single main street.

What to rent

This is an easy one. The roads are paved throughout and there is no sustained climbing, so a comfortable sedan or MPV covers it. Air conditioning that genuinely works is the specification that matters most — the west coast is hot and humid, and a weak AC unit ruins a two-hour drive.

Practical things worth sorting

• Toll card. The route out of Jakarta uses toll roads, paid with a prepaid electronic card at the gate — cash is not accepted. Confirm with your rental agency whether a card is included, and top it up before you leave.
• Fuel. Fill up before the coastal section. Stations exist, but they are less frequent than in the city.
• Accommodation access. Some beachfront properties are down narrow access lanes off the coast road. If you are booking a smaller place rather than a large resort, ask about parking and access before you arrive at night.
• Sea conditions. Currents on this coast can be strong and vary by beach. Take local advice on where it is safe to swim rather than assuming a calm-looking stretch is safe.
