Practically, this means the road can be closed in your direction when you arrive at it, and you wait. When to leave

For the return, either leave early on Sunday or leave late — after dinner. Sunday afternoon is the single worst window in either direction.

Long public holiday weekends multiply everything. If your dates fall on one, treat the travel times as roughly double and plan the day around the drive rather than fitting the drive into the day.

Which car makes sense

The road up is a sustained climb with tight bends. A car with adequate power and confident brakes turns that from a chore into a pleasant drive; a small, fully loaded car with four adults and luggage will feel strained, especially on the way up.

Ground clearance matters less than you would expect on the main road, which is paved throughout, but becomes relevant if your accommodation is on one of the smaller side lanes off the pass — many villas and guesthouses sit up steep, narrow access roads. Ask where exactly you are staying before deciding on the smallest car.

An MPV or a compact SUV is the comfortable default for a group. If it is just two of you, a decent sedan is entirely fine.

Fuel, tolls, and the practical checklist

Part of the route uses toll roads, paid with a prepaid electronic card at the gate — no cash. Top it up before you go. Fill the tank before you start the climb; stations exist on the pass but queues on a busy weekend are their own delay.

Jakarta's odd-even scheme (ganjil-genap) restricts some main roads at some hours based on plate number, and the covered roads and hours change over time.
