Where the airport actually is

Lombok International Airport sits near Praya, in the centre-south of the island — not next to the beach towns most people are heading for. This surprises visitors who assume it must be near Senggigi or Mataram, the way Bali's airport sits close to the southern resorts.

In practice: Kuta Lombok and the south coast are the closest destinations by a comfortable margin. Mataram, Senggigi, and the Gili harbours in the northwest are a genuine cross-island drive. Sembalun and the Rinjani side is further still. Knowing which category your destination falls into is the single most useful thing to sort out before you land.

How the handover works

Rental handover at Praya is usually a meet-and-greet rather than a row of branded counters. Someone meets you in or just outside the arrivals area with the car, you check the vehicle and paperwork together, and you drive away from the airport car park. Some agencies will instead deliver the car to your accommodation, which is worth asking about if you land late.

Because it is a person rather than a desk, communication matters. Confirm your flight number, arrival time, and a phone number the agency can reach you on. If your flight is delayed, message them — the person meeting you is waiting in an airport, not sitting at a counter with a screen.

Check the car before you drive off

Do this properly, in the car park, before you leave. It takes five minutes and it is the only moment where the condition of the vehicle is provably not your doing.

• Walk the car and photograph every panel, both bumpers, the roof, and all four wheels including the alloys.
• Photograph the fuel gauge and the odometer.
• Check the tyres, including tread depth and the spare, and confirm there is a jack and tools.
• Test the air conditioning before you leave — do not discover it is weak an hour into a cross-island drive.
• Confirm the fuel policy: what level it is at now and what level it must come back at.

Documents to have ready

Bring your national driving licence, an International Driving Permit, and your passport. Indonesian law expects foreign drivers to hold both the home licence and an IDP, agencies generally ask for them at handover, and roadside checks do happen. Carry them in the car, not in a hotel safe.

Night arrivals

If you land after dark, be honest about what follows. Unfamiliar roads, limited street lighting outside towns, and a long drive north are a rough combination after a travel day. Two reasonable options: base your first night near the airport or in Kuta Lombok and drive on in daylight, or arrange for the car to be delivered to your accommodation the next morning instead.

Driving out of the airport

The road out of Praya is straightforward and reasonably well surfaced. Set your navigation before you move — signal is fine at the airport and less consistent on parts of the route. Fill up at a station on the main road rather than assuming you will find one closer to your destination, especially if you are heading somewhere rural.

Returning the car

Agree the return arrangement when you collect the vehicle, not the night before your flight. Confirm where you hand it back at the airport, how much time to allow, and the fuel level required. Then leave more time than you think you need — the drive back south from the northwest of the island is longer than it looks.
