Why Lombok pricing is harder to pin down than Bali's

Ask five agencies in Lombok what a week with a small automatic costs and you will get five different answers, and not because anyone is trying to overcharge you. Lombok's rental market is younger and less standardised than Bali's, with more small independent operators and fewer large fleets setting a visible baseline. That means the price you are quoted depends heavily on who you ask, when you ask, and what you ask for.

Rather than quoting numbers that go stale the moment a season turns, it is more useful to understand the levers. Once you know what moves the price, you can read any quote and tell whether it is fair.

Lever one: vehicle class

The cheapest tier in Lombok is the same as everywhere in Indonesia — a small hatchback or city car, manual transmission, seating four in comfort and five at a squeeze. Step up to a compact MPV (the seven-seater workhorse of Indonesian roads) and the daily rate rises, but so does your ability to fit luggage, surfboards, and a family. A higher-clearance SUV costs more again, and in Lombok that extra clearance is not vanity: several of the best beaches in the south sit at the end of roads that reward ground clearance.

Automatic transmission carries a premium almost everywhere in Indonesia because automatics are less common in local fleets. If you cannot drive a manual, budget for that gap and book earlier — automatics are the first thing to sell out.

Lever two: how long you are renting

Almost every agency in Lombok prices a week below seven times the daily rate, and a month well below thirty times. If your trip is five or six days, it is genuinely worth asking what a full week costs — the difference is often small enough that the extra days come close to free. Conversely, a single-day rental is usually the worst value per day you will find.

Lever three: season

Lombok's high season tracks Bali's: the dry months in the middle of the year, plus the year-end holiday period, plus Indonesian school holidays. Rates firm up and availability tightens in those windows, particularly for automatics and seven-seaters. Travel in the shoulder or wet season and you will find both better rates and more willingness to negotiate on extras.

Lever four: what is included, and what is not

This is where quotes that look identical stop being identical. Ask specifically about:

• Fuel policy. Most Lombok rentals are full-to-full. Confirm the tank is actually full at pickup and photograph the gauge.
• Insurance. Ask what is covered, what the excess is, and whether it applies to a single-vehicle incident on an unpaved road.
• Delivery. Airport or hotel delivery is common in Lombok and sometimes free within a radius, sometimes not. Praya airport sits in the south, well away from Senggigi in the northwest — that distance can carry a fee.
• Extra driver, child seats, roof racks. Surfboard-friendly setups in particular are worth confirming rather than assuming.

The deposit is a separate budget line

The biggest surprise for first-time visitors is not the rate — it is the deposit. Lombok's market still leans cash-deposit-heavy today. Where a growing share of Bali listings now offer $0 or a small card hold, Lombok has not reached that point yet, and you should plan for a cash deposit unless a specific listing tells you otherwise.
