Travellers arriving in Lombok from Bali often expect the same rental conventions to apply, and they do not. Bali has a deep, competitive self-drive market where a growing number of verified agencies offer zero-deposit terms. Lombok is a younger, smaller market, and it still leans heavily toward cash deposits. That is not a warning sign in itself. It is just the current baseline, and it is worth budgeting for before you land.

What the deposit is actually for

A rental deposit is collateral, not a fee. The agency is holding value against three things: damage to the vehicle, late return, and the cost of chasing you if either happens. In a market where most agencies self-insure rather than carry a comprehensive commercial policy, the deposit is doing more of that work than it would in a market with heavier insurance penetration. That is the honest reason Lombok deposits skew higher and skew toward cash.

What a reasonable figure looks like

There is no single official number, and any article claiming one is inventing it. What you can judge is proportionality. A deposit in the region of a few days' rental on a mainstream hatchback or MPV is a normal, defensible ask. A deposit that starts approaching a meaningful fraction of the car's resale value is a signal that the agency has neither insurance nor confidence, and you are being asked to underwrite both.

Cash versus card hold

A card hold is always preferable when it is offered. It releases automatically after the return inspection, nothing physically changes hands, and there is no argument about how many notes were counted. In Lombok, card holds are less common than in Bali, so expect a cash conversation more often than not.

If it is cash, insist on these three things:

• A written receipt stating the exact amount received.
• The return conditions in writing: what the deposit covers, and what would justify withholding any of it.
• A documented handover inspection, with dated photos of every existing scratch, the fuel level, and the odometer, agreed by both sides before you drive off.

That last point resolves the overwhelming majority of deposit disputes anywhere in Indonesia. A five-minute photo walk-around is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy.

Questions worth asking before you pay

• Is the deposit returned in cash at drop-off, or transferred later, and if later, how much later?
• Does the deposit cover the insurance excess, or is the excess a separate liability on top of it?
• What happens to the deposit if the return is delayed by a ferry cancellation or a flight change?
• Who inspects the car on return, and can it be done with you present rather than after you leave?

Can you get a no-deposit rental in Lombok?

Not as a standard offering, not yet. Zero-deposit listings are common in Bali because that market has enough professionally insured agencies to make it viable.
