Lombok Family Road Trip Guide
Why families end up driving in Lombok
Lombok rewards families with quiet beaches, short walks to waterfalls, and villages that are genuinely welcoming to children. What it does not have is a public transport network you can build a family holiday around. Buses are infrequent, routes rarely connect the places you actually want to visit, and hiring a driver for every leg gets restrictive fast when your day runs on nap times rather than schedules.
A self-drive car solves the real problem: it lets you leave when the kids are ready, stop when they are not, and carry the bags, snacks, and swim gear that make the difference between a good day and a hard one.
Picking the right size of car
The temptation is to book the smallest car that fits everyone. Resist it. Lombok's roads are narrow but the issue is not width, it is heat and luggage. A family of four with suitcases, a cooler bag, and beach kit fills a small hatchback completely, which means bags in laps and a bad-tempered back seat by the second stop.
An MPV or a small SUV is the sensible default. The MPV gives you the boot space and the third row if you have grandparents or a fourth child along. The SUV gives you the ground clearance that matters if the northern waterfall roads or the Sembalun highland route are on your list. If your trip stays on the south coast and the main Mataram–Senggigi corridor, an MPV is plenty.
The routes that actually work with children
Not every drive on Lombok is family-friendly. The ones that are:
- Senggigi to the northern viewpoints. Malimbu and Nipah are proper coastal pull-offs with short walks and no scrambling. Easy to break the drive into small pieces.
- The south coast beach run around Kuta Lombok. Short hops between bays, mostly flat, easy to abandon halfway if the mood turns.
- Sendang Gile waterfall near Senaru. A short, well-made path from the parking area. Tiu Kelep, further on, involves river crossings and is better suited to older children.
The Senaru-to-Sembalun mountain crossing is spectacular and genuinely demanding: tight switchbacks, long climbs, and stretches with no phone signal. It is doable with kids who travel well, and miserable with kids who do not. Decide honestly before you commit to it.
Car seats are the thing to arrange in advance
This is the detail families most often discover too late. Child seats are not a standard inclusion with rental cars in Indonesia and availability varies considerably between agencies. Ask about them when you enquire, not at pickup, and be specific about the age and weight of each child. Some travellers bring their own seat from home for exactly this reason, since most airlines carry a child seat without counting it against the baggage allowance.
When a seat is supplied, check it properly at handover: intact straps, a working buckle, and a base that fits the car's belt system without improvisation.
Timing your drives
Plan the longer drives around the day rather than against it. Early mornings are cooler, the roads are quieter, and children travel better before the heat sets in. Avoid arriving anywhere new after dark: the smaller roads are unlit, often unfenced, and livestock on the carriageway after dusk is routine.
Fill the tank in Mataram or Senggigi before heading north or east. Stations thin out considerably once you leave the main corridor, and hunting for fuel with tired children in the back is the wrong kind of adventure.
What to check at handover
- Air conditioning that cools the back, not just the front vents.
- Working rear seatbelts in every position you intend to use.
- A spare tyre and jack you have actually seen.
- Clear photos of any existing damage before you drive away.
Booking the car
Every real listing on Arrentio shows the deposit amount, the agency's verification status, and the full vehicle details up front, before you commit to anything. Lombok still leans toward cash deposits today, so factor that figure into your budget alongside the daily rate. If a cash deposit is awkward with a family budget, say so when you enquire and we will try to match you with a no-deposit-friendly agency.
