Lombok Road Conditions: What to Expect When Self-Driving

Lombok is easier to drive than most people expect, and harder in specific places

Visitors arriving from Bali often assume Lombok will be the same experience with less traffic. Half of that is true. Lombok has far less congestion — outside of Mataram there is rarely anything you would call a traffic jam — but the road surface varies far more than Bali, and the variation is not always signposted. Knowing which category of road you are on at any moment is most of what safe self-driving here comes down to.

The good roads

The main arteries are genuinely good. The bypass connecting Lombok International Airport at Praya to the Mandalika area in the south was built to a high standard and is a pleasure to drive. The main road running north from the airport toward Mataram, and the coastal road up through Senggigi, are both sealed, well-graded, and easy going.

If your itinerary is airport to Senggigi, or airport to Kuta Lombok, you will spend almost the whole drive on roads that would not feel out of place anywhere.

The middling roads

The east-west road along the south, the roads inland through the rice country, and most of the routes circling the island are sealed but narrower. Expect no shoulder, frequent motorbikes, occasional livestock, and villages where the effective speed limit is whatever lets you stop for a child. Surface quality drifts between good and patched without much warning, and potholes that are obvious in daylight are invisible at night.

This is the majority of your driving on Lombok. It is not difficult, it just does not reward hurrying.

The rough roads

The last stretch down to several southern beaches is where sealed surface gives way. Access tracks to bays like Mawi, and some of the smaller beaches on the southwest peninsula around Sekotong, are unsealed, rutted, and can be genuinely poor after rain. This is the single strongest argument for renting something with decent ground clearance rather than the cheapest city car available.

If you do end up on a track that looks worse than you expected, the right move is almost always to stop, get out, and look at it on foot before committing. Turning around is much harder than not going in.

Mountain roads in the north

The routes climbing toward Senaru and the Rinjani foothills, and the road that traverses the north of the island, are scenic and mostly sealed but include tight switchbacks, steep grades, and stretches where landslip repairs have left an uneven surface. Use a low gear on descents rather than riding the brakes, and be aware that mobile coverage is patchy up there.

Rain changes everything

Lombok gets a real wet season, and its roads respond to it. Sealed roads develop standing water fast where drainage is limited. Unsealed access tracks turn slick. Hill roads occasionally see small landslips that reduce a two-lane road to one for a while. None of this makes driving impossible, but a route that took you an hour in the dry can take considerably longer, and beach tracks that were fine in July can be a bad idea in January.

Practical driving habits that matter here

• Use the horn the way locals do. A short tap approaching a blind bend or when passing a motorbike is a courtesy, not aggression.
• Overtake conservatively. Blind crests are common and oncoming motorbikes often ride in the middle of the road.
• Watch for motorbikes on your left at all times. They will filter past you at junctions and roundabouts without expecting you to have seen them.
• Avoid long night drives on rural roads. Unlit obstacles, unlit vehicles, and animals on the carriageway are all much more likely after dark.

The paperwork side

Bring your home licence and an International Driving Permit — police checks do happen, and having the right documents turns a stop into a two-minute formality. Keep the rental agreement and the agency contact in the car.
