How to Rent a Car in Dubai, UAE Without the Hassle
Renting a car in Dubai, UAE
Dubai is one of the easiest cities in the world to explore by car — wide, well-signed roads, and destinations spread far enough apart (from Downtown to the Marina to the desert) that a car genuinely saves time. Here's how to rent one without running into surprises.
License requirements
If you're a tourist, most UAE-licensed agencies will accept:
- A valid driver's license from your home country (GCC, US, UK, EU, and many other licenses are accepted directly)
- An International Driving Permit if your home license isn't in Latin script
- A passport and UAE entry stamp or visa for identity verification
Always confirm directly with the agency which licenses they accept before you arrive — requirements can vary slightly by provider.
Deposits and insurance
This is where most rental surprises happen. Before you sign anything, confirm:
- The deposit amount and whether it's held on a card or charged in cash
- Whether basic insurance is included in the daily rate, and what it actually covers (collision damage waiver, third-party liability)
- The excess/deductible you'd be responsible for in the event of damage
- Whether Salik (Dubai's toll system) charges are billed separately after your rental ends
Typical costs to budget for
Beyond the daily rate, ask about:
- Airport pickup/drop-off surcharges
- Additional driver fees if more than one person will drive
- Cross-emirate travel restrictions (some rentals limit you to Dubai only)
- Fuel policy — full-to-full is the most common and easiest to manage
Picking a trustworthy agency
Dubai has a large rental market, which means both excellent options and some that cut corners on maintenance or documentation. Prioritize agencies that show verified vehicle photos, clear pricing before booking, and real provider ratings — not just a phone number and a promise.
Arrentio is bringing that verification-first approach to the UAE: agencies are vetted, vehicle documents are checked, and pricing is transparent before you ever reach out. We're currently in pre-launch — explore the marketplace and join the waitlist to get early access when bookings open in Dubai.
